A dear friend of mine made a statement the other day that basically stated that the reason we have seen the number of recent so called ‘Acts of God’ and the deterioration of morals and society in general is due to ‘Religion’ no longer being taught in our schools. It seems that the thrust of his statement is that because God has been taken out of society over the recent past that he has stepped back (being the gentleman that he is) and allowed these natural disasters to happen.
I disagreed strongly. The world is littered with 'Broken Societies' due to nothing more than the 'have not’s' rebelling against the 'have lots'! God or religion has nothing to do with it - he is just a figment of insecure people’s imagination. I say ‘He’ because no woman would ever fuck things up the way he has! I remember the day I became a non believer - it was in 1962 - I was 9 - there was a Kindergarten school in a town called Aberavon in North Wales.
Like many Welsh towns it was a coal mining town and it sat in a valley surrounded by years of coal slag excavated from the mine. One morning as the kids were in their morning assembly (no doubt saying the lords prayer) when one of slag hills gave way, the school was engulfed in 30 feet of slag and all the children and teachers were killed. It was a national disaster of the highest order. I remember watching it on TV and crying along with my Mom and Dad - the picture still haunts me to this day.
However, going back to the thrust of his statement that it is that recently God has been removed from society and our schools - (again I disagreed strongly). In the early 60's every school started their day with the Lord’s Prayer. Both parents and teachers were allowed to dispense physical punishment to misbehaving kids. The gap between rich and poor was not as wide and certainly not as severe as it is today. We grew up watching cartoons, family shows like I love Lucy and Bonanza and we had no violent video games to act as babysitters and no internet to poison our minds.
The problem with today's 'broken societies' started with the lost generation of the 60's who grew up to become the parents of today's young adults who have been brought up in an environment of greed and the survival of the fittest. As long as Capitalism allows the educated minorities to exploit the ignorance of the (no longer give a damn) ignorant masses, society will continue to deteriorate to where we will self destruct.
The next world war is just around the corner and interestingly enough most of the contributors to the global violence are supposedly from deeply religious backgrounds. Obviously my friend touched a nerve and I couldn't resist taking the time to write down a few truths about the myth of religion.
For further confirmation you might want to watch the following documentary http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/ and George’s brilliant oratory which further dispels the myth of religion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o.
The sooner we close all the churches and re-open them as places of free education to the 'have not’s' the sooner we would have a better world to live in. Until we ban unsavoury TV shows, Movies and Video Games, until we provide free education and health care to everyone and provide everybody with enough disposable income to live with pride instead of surviving in shame we will continue in this downward spiral. But this will never happen as the 'have lots' are making too much money from the 'have not’s'.
So you might be thinking well what can be done to change all this - the answer - nothing – it’s too late - we are all heading for extinction - the world is quickly becoming a place I'd rather not be. If nature doesn't kill mankind then inner conflict will. I could go on and on but I see I already have so I'll end here. May your ‘God’ be with you!
I find your comments intriquing. I happen to believe in God but not the way it has been described in either of these video clips or what I see written in this blog. I believe that we do have a creator and that He does love us the way we were created. What I have seen is the church has distorted the truth and much of what we see taught through the so called Christian church is mans idea or interpretation of what God is saying. I believe we are created as individuals with a mind and body that houses who we are while we are on the face of this earth. Our purpose is love mankind and give back to society in whatever way we can using the talents and gifts that we have been given.
Having said this I know we live in an utruistic society and your point about the have and the have nots is well taken. I happen to know a number of people whom I would consider in the have category that give above and beyond back to society and they are not looking for a return on their investment nor any recognition.
Interesting conversation and I will sum up by saying that “life is meant to be enjoyed not endured”. We have a choice in this world to make of life what we want it to be. I maintain that some people never make the choice, they look at the world from a vantage point of blame.
